In its earliest conception in classical Greek writings, the relationship between the artist and the muse was mutual. The woman-muse was acting like an intermediary for the Gods, who offered access to the knowledge that the man-artist lacked. Back to 20th century, Gala Dali was the uber-muse. She first inspired the French surrealist poet, Paul Éluard, and then the Spanish surrealist painter, Salvador Dalí, whom she lived with from 1929 until her death in 1982.

“Am I dreaming or what?” Jean-Paul Gaultier said when he first met the Burlesque star, Dita Von Teese. The designer talks about his muse with great admiration. They first met each other in a meeting with her ex-husband (Marilyn Manson). Gaultier and Manson were supposed to collaborate in a show, but Von Teese gained the attention of the French designer. For Gaultier, Von Teese is how a Parisian woman should look like - black hair, porcelain skin, red lipstick, and chic. But also, Von Teese admires Gaultier a lot. In an interview with the Real Style magazine in 2013, she said that she has a lot of same obsessions as Gaultier - corsetry, bullet bras and girdles. For her, it was a dream come true to meet him and become his muse and friend. During his recent couture show in Paris, his muse influence was very obvious. Glamour, butterfly-inspired outfits and sexy stockings - Dita herself closed the show.
